Summary of survey held on Saturday 26th January 2002

Dear Mr Watts,

I am writing on behalf of Southend on Sea residents group 'Parklife' to inform you of the results of the survey regarding Priory Park, held on the above date.

As you may be aware, representatives from the coalition of Karers, Parklife, PPPS, Friends of the Earth and Green Party polled people on their views regarding this issue. The specific proposal put to shoppers was:

'Priory Park and its surroundings are preserved in their entirety, and are never subjected to any loss or degradation from road building or development.'

During the period from 10.30am until 2.00pm (when we called a halt due to poor weather conditions) 420 people were polled. The result being as follows:

I agree with the proposal (above): 408

I disagree with this proposal: 10

No box ticked: 2

The figures show that out of a sample of 418 people (with completed forms), over 97.5% were in favour of protecting Priory Park in its entirety (hence opposing the SBC F5 road proposal), whilst 2.5% were in favour of the new road, or development on the site of some form.

In light of the above results and events over the past few months, I would like to request specifically on behalf of the 'Parklife' group, that the Southend Borough Council (SBC) F5 A1159 Dual Carriageway proposal is cancelled immediately.

We believe that the scheme will not solve the issue of congestion in Southend on Sea, and will at the same time be of great detriment to Priory Park. I would also like to remind you that SBC are merely trustees for the park, on behalf of the pople of this town, a large percentage of which object to this road.

I have included the survey papers to validate the findings of the coalition. I trust that you will present these to the Council as further feedback on this issue.

I look forward to your prompt response on this matter,
